TDM plans RM400m capex

TDM Bhd, one of Malaysia’s smallest plantations and healthcare group, is going all out to ramp up the productivity of its oil palm trees and boost its medical segment by allocating an estimated capital expenditure of RM400 million next year.

TDM chief executive officer Badrul Hisham Mahari said the capital expenditure will be spent on three areas — expansion of oil palm estates in Kalimantan; upgrading of estates in Terengganu; and beefing up of its hospitals.

“This year, we were unable to record any significant progress in planting because of land management issues but I expect we will be able to carry out planting of 5,000ha per year starting in 2015.

“We have planted about 12,000ha, of which some 500ha have started to bear fruits and we are also building a new 60-tonne mill,” Badrul told Business Times.

In the hospitals division, TDM, which is owned by the Terengganu government, will construct new buildings at the Kuantan Medical Centre and Kuala Terengganu Specialist Centre.

“Kuantan’s building is ready and undergoing commissioning, while the Kuala Terengganu building is expected to be completed in November next year and be operational by early 2016.

“We are also keen to further increase the number of hospitals, either through acquisitions or building green field ones,” he said.

TDM is also upgrading its plantation assets in the state by incorporating cutting-edge and cost-effective technologies.

Badrul said to boost productivity, TDM will use new, better-yield planting materials, seek more grade A land as well as improve mechanisation, water management, fertilising and milling technologies.

TDM owns 44,000ha of oil palm estates, two mills in Terengganu and 25,000ha in Kalimantan.

It also operates four specialist hospitals — Kelana Jaya Medical Centre in Petaling Jaya, Taman Desa Medical Centre off Jalan Kelang Lama, Kuantan Medical Centre in Kuantan and Kuala Terengganu Specialist Hospital in Kuala Terengganu.
